First Post (not of chicken)

Merhaba ("hello" in Turkish) blog community! My name is Naomi Fujiki and I am currently a junior at the University of Pennsylvania studying European History and Political Science. I will be studying abroad this fall semester at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey.

This is my first post on my new blog, Eating Chicken in Turkey. The title of my blog was inspired by my good friend and fellow prankster, Lauren Lubetsky. The two of us actually started a blog last December called Professor S-Quirrel, which awarded squirrel-names and house points to anyone who submitted funny pictures of squirrels around Penn's Campus to us. Unfortunately we had to discontinue that blog for a number of reasons, including but not limited to the fact that we got bored of it within days and that we forgot the password to our joint e-mail account under Lauromi Fujetsky.

Anyway, Eating Chicken in Turkey will not only include pictures of me eating chicken in Turkey, but will also document my travels in and around the country. I plan on going to Georgia, Armenia, Russia, Greece, and definitely Lebanon, Libya, and Iraq.

I leave for Istanbul on September 7th and arrive on the 8th. While I find a place to live for the next 3 months, I will be staying at Levanten Hostel in the Beyoglu district, which is located above the Golden Horn, where the waters of the Bosphorus separate the "old" and the "new" parts of European Istanbul.

If you would like to follow me as I explore the Byzantine Empire, just submit your e-mail address on the top right side of this page. Hoscakal ("goodbye" in Turkish) for now and tuvalet nerede ("where's the toilet" in Turkish)?!

  1. FYI: I was completely joking about going to Lebanon, Libya, and Iraq.

Many of you took it upon yourselves to tell me "Naomi, Iraq is really dangerous. I am afraid for your safety." Now let me ask you this: what about Lebanon and Libya?!!

But seriously, thank you for your concern.
